Eva Simms

Eva Simms is professor of psychology at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. Her interests are interdisciplinary (psychology, philosophy, poetry, ecopsychology, feminism), but they converge in her writing and research on child psychology and ecopsychology. In her phenomenological studies, she has investigated children's sense of embodiment, co-existentiality, place, things, time, and language primarily from a perspective informed by the philosophy of Merleau-Ponty. She describes her work as a radically non-dualistic or chiasmic psychology and phenomenology, which tries to create a language for dimensions of human experience that otherwise remain unthought. She has published books and papers on child psychology, Goethean science/phenomenology, ecopsychology, wholism and Gestalt ideas in Merleau-Ponty, and feminist phenomenology. She is founder of PlaceLab, a Duquesne University research group dedicated to researching the relationship between people and place, and co-founder of Autumn House Press, a publisher of contemporary American poetry and literature.
