Managing Director, President, Principal in the Investment Industry
He/Him · Petaluma, California, United States

James Burleson has spent more than three decades pursuing a career that brings together finance, entrepreneurship, and community service. Over the years, he has built businesses, guided investments, and supported ventures that combine innovation with long-term vision. Just as important as his professional accomplishments, he has made philanthropy and civic leadership a consistent part of his life, ensuring that service remains equal in weight to his work in business and finance. His career in the markets began at a young age. At only 24 years old, James became one of the youngest seat holders and market makers on the Pacific Stock Exchange. His peers soon recognized his ability to lead, and he was elected as the youngest Chair of the Nominating Committee for the Board of Governors. These milestones set him apart in a competitive industry. He went on to hold senior positions with firms such as Letco LMM, Joseph D. Heard Jr. Inc., Premier Trading Group, and Charles Schwab. As Partner and Lead Market Maker at Letco, he contributed to the company’s success until its sale to Toronto Dominion Bank in 2002. His expertise in derivatives and trading strategies became a defining feature of his career and formed the groundwork for his entrepreneurial ventures. In 2004, he founded Burleson + Company, an independent advisory firm that grew to oversee nearly $800 million in assets under management. The firm was known for its focus on wealth management and financial planning, emphasizing not just returns but also aligning investments with clients’ broader life goals. He later expanded his work with Northern Peak Consulting, advising individuals and businesses on long-term growth and strategy. His entrepreneurial path also included the creation of BCo Venture Fund I, which supported early-stage companies. Among its investments was Pathwater, a bottled water brand that promoted sustainability and challenged traditional practices in the industry. His dedication to community service has been constant throughout his life. For nearly two decades, James has been a member of the Sonoma–Marin Fair Board, supporting youth programs, agricultural education, and cultural opportunities. He also spent more than a decade with the Rotary Club of Petaluma, serving as Treasurer of its foundation. For over twenty years, he has contributed his expertise to the St. Vincent Parish Finance Committee and served on the Board of St. Vincent High School. He has also dedicated time and resources to the Petaluma Educational Foundation, Boys and Girls Club, and Polly Klaas Foundation over the last 25 years. Raised in a military family, he learned discipline, adaptability, and a sense of service at an early age. After completing a degree in finance from the University of Texas at Austin, he maintained ties with both his alma mater and his fraternity, Sigma Chi. Away from his professional responsibilities, he enjoys skiing with his children, golfing in the Utah mountains, traveling, and following the markets. James Burleson’s journey reflects a steady balance between professional success and meaningful service. His career, community work, and family traditions together show how leadership, responsibility, and vision can create a legacy that lasts well beyond business achievements.
